Overview

The desert is not a road. It is a living, shifting environment that rewards preparation, awareness, and feel. S1 is your foundation — not just for everything that follows in Desertica curriculum, but for every kilometre you will ever drive in sand.

Before a wheel turns, you will understand your vehicle at a level most drivers never reach. You will learn how the desert is built — how dunes form, why they behave the way they do, and what that means for the decisions you make behind the wheel. Then you drive.

By the end of S1 you will have driven small dunes with real confidence and touched medium-sized terrain for the first time. More importantly, you will have developed the foundational feel that all advanced desert driving is built upon.

What you'll cover

• Pre-drive vehicle preparation and safety checks — what to check, what it means, and why it matters
• Understanding your 4WD system — diff lock, low range, traction control, and when to use each
• Tyre pressure management — the single most important variable in desert driving
• Reading dune formations — how dunes are structured, where the firm sand is, and where it isn't
• Wheel placement fundamentals — the discipline of putting your tyres exactly where you intend
• First drives on small dunes with progressive introduction to medium terrain by session end

Progression — Marshal sign-off required. Member must demonstrate vehicle preparation competence and controlled driving on small to medium dunes.
